This product was developed under our client’s Phase II SBIR grant from U.S. DOE. Optical sensing provides inherent electrical isolation and extremely high bandwidth / high frequency measurements. Sensing, combined with high-power switching devices, yields a 5-megawatt inverter with complete digital control in a 19” rack form factor. Target market includes commercial utilities and naval shipboard applications for high-power switching, such as EMALS magnetic catapult aircraft launch aboard aircraft carriers. PPI performed mechanical design and manufacturing.
Challenges included extremely dense mechanical packaging and advanced thermal management, shedding approx 20KW of heat via multiple large heat pipes.
