PPI is exclusive OEM and commercialization partner for a line of fiber-optic based power quality measurement systems. The team has successfully commercialized an optical sensor intended for commercial and military applications. These devices provide highly efficient, cost effective power quality solutions to meet the increased demands in power distribution systems.
Challenges included design of low-cost, high-reliability, high-precision optical components which met stringent field ruggedness requirements.
The mounting requirements for the sensor include precise alignment with the axis of the conductor and specified distance from its surface. Conductor size can vary with each application. The solution was a scalable SLS mounting clip with integral fiber optic cable holders. The polyamide SLS part's material properties are well suited to the sensor's unique environment.
The alignment of the fiber optic sensor’s internal components requires non ferritic housing components that fit together with high precision, all without sacrificing adjustability. PPI's master machinists were able to meet the tight tolerances of the miniature parts.
