Endoscopy GI Scope
A fully-instrumented training endoscope for Gastro-Intestinal procedures was developed as a component within the client's suite of virtual reality Endoscopic training systems. In the eyes, hands, and minds of doctors and medical students, the device served as a functional medical instrument, providing input and force feedback during training simulations.
Challenges included extreme miniaturization of position sensing and force feedback systems, in a package rugged enough to survive thousands of hours of intense use. PPI provided turnkey OEM services, from concepts through volume production.
An existing medical device was reverse engineered to allow for electromechanical components inside, while maintaining the original exterior appearance. Once this engineering was completed, the resulting CAD file was used to make a Rapid Prototype of the outer shells. After the RP shells were functionally tested, duplicates were made using a urethane casting process.
