“Building as business model”
Project Background
In recent years much emphasis has been placed on developing work environments that foster well-being and productivity. A key element has been the idea of creating open environments where people can interact with and be exposed to information outside their area of expertise. These new work environments also employ subtle design elements, such as direct natural sunlight and views to the outdoors to create a positive atmosphere for workers. Such work environments stimulate creativity and productivity and ultimately make good business sense.
Project Development
After thorough research in the area of work place environments, we decided to create a prototype for our own future headquarters. We began by dissecting our biological business model and developing a program based on its components. The key was to develop a communal space, "Interactive Working Gallery", around which the work and office spaces would be organized. In this way, employees would have the opportunity to discuss, review, and be exposed to different projects that could stimulate new ideas. In an effort to promote well-being, we chose a deeply wooded site and developed outdoor working and meeting areas. Natural light was also a key design element, but we employed computer-controlled louvers to cut down on heat gain and glare. This project continues to evolve with more to come.
