Observatory Park at The Turner Farm
Great Falls, Virginia
"Using astronomy to inspire children to pursue careers in innovation”
Project Background
This project provides many opportunities to "innovate the built environment" due to its unique background and elements. Charles Olin, a former Smithsonian Institute physicist and self-educated astronomer, developed the original concept. Mr. Olin is president of the Analemma Society of Great Falls, an astronomy club, composed of experts in the fields of science and astronomy. Mr. Olin also maintains a passion for educating the young and has written countless papers on science and astronomy curriculums. Through the integration of his two passions, science and education, Mr. Olin began to develop the primary components for Observatory Park eleven years ago. Mr. Olin approached Fairfax County with his concept and they granted him a seven-acre parcel (formerly the Nike Missile Site) in Great Falls, VA that coincidentally has the darkest night sky to be found in the Washington Metropolitan area.
Project Development
PPI is currently teamed with Technology Worx, L.L.C., Michielli Wyetzner Architects, and Dewberry to design and develop Observatory Park for the Analemma Society and Fairfax County Park Authority. Architect Frank Michielli has proposed a "movement through the universe" theme that adds a truly unique approach to the project. The combined efforts of the diverse team will ultimately establish a prototype for innovative science and technology centers that respect the culture and natural context of the locality into which they are set.
