A fully-instrumented training Bronchoscope was developed as a component within the client's suite of virtual reality Endoscopic training systems. In the eyes, hands, and minds of doctors and medical students, the device served as a functional medical instrument, providing input and force feedback during training simulations.
Challenges included extreme miniaturization of position sensing and force feedback systems, in a package rugged enough to survive thousands of hours of intense use. PPI provided turnkey OEM services, from concepts through volume production.
The original simulator design utilized a specialized button found in the actual medical device. This button proved to be very costly and difficult to obtain. An adaptor for a more commonly available tactile switch was designed and fabricated in SLS. Due to the small size and relatively low production quantities, the SLS adapters are used directly in the final product as a viable alternative to conventional manufacturing methods.
